Speakeasy Dr Watson: back to the 20’s

The year 2020 just started and rang in a new era. However, the 1920’s, also known as the roaring 20’s are still 100 years later one of the most remembered and romanticized decades of the 20th century. Flappers, jazz, economic prosperity, the prohibition, boisterous parties, the Great Gatsby and Peaky Blinders are probably the first things most of us think about in connection to this time.

This extravagant and secretive aesthetic got brought to our time by the first speakeasy bar in Leeuwarden: Dr Watson. Speakeasies were bars that were selling alcoholic beverages during the prohibition in the US from 1920 to 1933. Dr Watson conveys exactly this secretive feeling, being located relatively hidden in a basement and rather hard to find, if you do not know where it is. “The aesthetic is kept really old-fashioned” and even the waiters are dressed up 20’s inspired with white shirts, suspenders and a bow-tie, “which I really like”, is what some of the guests are saying about the unique venue. They continue: “Watson’s is different to other bars, it has a really nice vibe… and the waiters are super nice as well, they like to talk to you and you can tell that they are enjoying working here”. Some other customers appreciate the connection to Sherlock Holmes: “I love the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch, so every time I go to Watson’s, it reminds me of the TV show”.

To find out where the connection to Sherlock Holmes is (apart from the name of the bar obviously) you might have to pay a visit and keep your eyes open while sipping on your gin tonic. The love for details will spark joy in anyone who pays a little more attention to their environment, especially when taking a closer look at the pictures.
